Injured Plymouth Argyle defender Gary Miller: ‘I missed Liverpool ovation because I was high as a kite’

GARY Miller has joked that he missed his stirring ovation from the Plymouth Argyle fans during Sunday’s stunning goalless draw with Liverpool – as he was ‘as high as a kite’.

The former St Johnstone, Ross County and Livingston defender sustained a nasty-looking ankle injury 15 minutes from time at Anfield and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher in obvious distress.

However, the 29-year-old was given painkilling drugs by the Pilgrims medical team and admits he was oblivious to the reception he received from the 9,000 visiting supporters and the sympathetic home fans on the other three sides of the famous ground.

After helping Derek Adams’ side secure a remarkable FA Cup replay with the Premier League challengers, the full-back has since discovered that he has not broken his ankle, but is awaiting the full extent of ligament damage that is likely to keep him out for some time.

He said: “It was a great result for the lads. I’m gutted I didn’t get to see the end of the game but [it] shows how strong a unit the team and the lads can be.

“I was told I got a good reception at the game but I was as high as a kite by then!”

He added in a post on Twitter: “Thanks to everyone for the kind messages, it’s much appreciated.

“The x-ray shows no break [but] a few splinters of bone.

“When the swelling goes down I’ll get scans to see the extent of the ligament damage and what’s going on.

“Then I can start my recovery as soon as possible and not miss too long.”

Meanwhile, former Celtic, St Mirren and Ross County midfielder Graham Carey has insisted Liverpool bringing on Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana late on to strengthen the youngest-ever Reds team in a bid to seal a victory only helped Plymouth’s attempt to hang on.

Carey, who revealed he fulfilled a childhood dream by playing at Anfield, commented on www.pafc.co.uk: “I think it actually spurred us on, for them to need those players to try and get a result.

“It showed we were doing everything right. It just spurred us on in the last 10 or 15 minutes.

“Now, as a club and a team, we can look forward to the replay.”
