Hearts head coach Ian Cathro insists he has proved to himself that he is strong enough to deal with the challenge of managing the club.

Cathro is still searching for his first win since being announced as Robbie Neilson’s replacement on December 5 after the Gorgie outfit lost 3-2 to Dundee on Friday having thrown away a commanding two goal lead.

The former Valencia and Newcastle United’s assistant manager also lost on his dugout debut to Rangers, while the club’s supporters made their feelings clear after Hearts were lucky to escape with a point in a 1-1 home draw with Patrick Thistle.

Cathro’s slow start has done little to silence the critics who questioned the wisdom of appointing the 30-year-old but the young coach insists he has learned that he can handle the demands of the job.

Cathro, whose team face Kilmarnock on Tuesday night, said: “I’ve learned an awful lot about everyone, about us. The only thing I’ve learned about myself is that I was right when I thought a long time ago that I would be strong enough to deal with these things.

“I’m confident and relaxed in the fact that, yeah, I’m fortunate that I’m strong and these challenges just add to making me a little bit better.

“We intend on making sure that that’s the case (Kilmarnock will be my first win) and that the fans come with us. They see what we give in the first 15 minutes.”
