Plymouth manager Derek Adams admits he is over the moon after watching his team set-up a glamour FA Cup tie against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Former Celtic midfielder Graham Carey’s extra-time penalty in Wedneday’s replay victory over Newport County secured the Pilgrims a lucrative third round clash at Anfield on January 8.
The League Two leaders will stand to make an estimated £500,000 from the clash and former Ross County manager Adams is relishing the prospect of pitting his wits against the five-time European Champions and Klopp.
“We spoke about it before the game that we knew the next round of the FA Cup was going to be a trip to Anfield.
“I’m sure the allocation for Anfield will be very good and we will sell that out.
“You do get nervous when the game is toing and froing.
“There was a lot of running from both sides and you think you are going to score, and then the next minute you think they are going to score.
“It was one of those games in a cup tie and it became quite open towards the end.”
Match-winner Carey, who joined Plymouth in 2015 following spells with St Mirren and County, admits he willl fulfil a life-long dream when he walks out at Anfield against his boyhood idols.
The Irishman, speaking to the Plymouth Herald, said: “Going to Anfield, from a personal point of view, is going to be a great day because I have been a Liverpool fan all my life.
“My whole family are Liverpool fans so I’m sure some of them will make the trip over.
“I’m sure I will have a lot of requests for tickets.
“We are going to enjoy it, but we are going to go there and try to get a result.
“No-one will give us a shot at getting a result but we have shown we can battle as a team and it’s the FA Cup so you never know.”
