Celtic’s Champions League rivals Borussia Monchengladbach have sacked head coach Andre Schubert following a woeful run of results.

Schubert guided the German club to a victory and a draw against the Hoops in Group C as the Bundesliga outfit finished third and secured a place in the Europa League.

But a wretched run of only three victories in 17 matches, including a 2-0 win at Parkhead in October, has left the Foals languishing in 14th place in their domestic table.

And the club’s hierarchy decided to take action following Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Wolfsburg.

Sporting director Max Eberl said: “In the last few days, we have had many talks and analysed and discussed our sporting development.

“Together with André, we have concluded that it is better for both parties to end our cooperation now.

“André helped us a great deal last season when he led the team to fourth place in the table and through play-offs at the start of this season to reach the Champions League.

“The development has stalled for various reasons.

“Looking at the exciting challenges, we have decided look for another coach.

“We thank André for his work with us and wish him all the best for his future assignments.”

Schubert said: “After consensual talks, we have come to the conclusion that a new impulse from the outside could be the right measure to bring the club, which is always more important and bigger than the individual, back on track.

“I thank you for a great time with great people.”
