IT boffin teaches Amazon Echo to say Scottish insults

A COMPUTER expert has trained his Amazon Echo to reel off classic Scottish insults.

Hilarious footage shows the £150 gadget saying “Yer da sells Avon” and other slights with an impeccable Home Counties accent.

Alexa, the received pronunciation “voice” of the Amazon Echo, also uses put downs such as: “Yer maw’s been around the toon mare than Stagecoach.”

The device was released in October and acts as a ‘virtual’ personal assistant.

The cylindrical speaker responds to voice activation and can provide people with the latest news, sports scores, music and can also set their diaries.

But Andrew Philp from Dunfermline, Fife, decided to have a bit of fun with his Echo.

The 25-year-old computing engineer was using the device at work and decided to buy one for himself to see if he could make it say some famous Scottish put-downs.

Andrew uploaded the results to YouTube with the title: “Yer maw drives a Volvo.”

The 29-second-clip starts with Andrew’s gadget sitting on top of a white table as he says to it: “Alexa, ask Scottish insults.”

In a female, English accent, the device responds: “Happenin’ maybs.”

Andrew replied: “Give me all you insults,” as the device flashes blue to show it’s registered his voice.

In her computerised voice, Alexa starts: “Yer da sells Avon. Yer maw’s got baws and yer da loves it.

“You’ll never be half the man yer maw is. Yer maw’s so fat, she fell off both sides ae the bed.

“You couldny get a bird in a pet shop. Yer maw’s been around the toon mare than Stagecoach.

“Yer maw drives a Volvo and yer da smells of mousemats.”

Andrew admits you need some experience of computer code to make the virtual assistant spout the Scottish insults.

He said: “There’s no malice meant in the insults, I just thought it’d be a good laugh for a project and my friends all seem to like it.

“We were using them at work and so I decided to buy one on the way home from Currys to see what I could make it say.

“Anyone could do it but you would need a bit of coding knowledge.

“At home my Echo is set up so I can control my lights in the house, but my accent can sometimes make it a bit confused, it seems to understand my partner’s better.

“I’m a big fan of the hockey so I’m trying to set it up so it can give me the scores for the Fife Flyers as my next project.”

Earlier this year, a video emerged showing the Echo speaker declaring that Rangers are only “three or four years old.”

Michael Mcgovern from East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, was told by his device that they club were formed in 2012 despite the club being founded in 1872.

The date of Rangers inception has been a contentious issue since the club’s financial difficulties and is used by rival fans to taunt supporters of the Glasgow team.
