Former Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart admits he is astonished that Rangers manager Mark Warburton did not have a game plan to combat his former club on Wednesday.

Hearts deservedly moved back up to second ahead of their Ibrox counterparts on Wednesday after Robbie Muirhead scored a brace in the 2-0 victory.

Warburton conceded after the match that Hearts’ tactics were exactly what he expected, and BT Sport pundit Stewart insists he is staggered by that admission.

He said: “I find it flabbergasting Mark Warburton comes out and says: ‘They played the way we expected them to play,’ yet it still didn’t seem like they had a game plan.

“As a youngster growing up, you are taught to turn the opposition, stretch the game so you’ve got a bit more space to play in.

“Rangers never did that once all night and Mark Warburton is talking about that ‘they knew Hearts were going to do that’. Where was the game plan?”

Stewart admits he also finds Warburton’s grievance over Joe Dodoo’s disallowed goal bizarre.

The equalising strike was ruled out for offside after Harry Forrester blocked goalkeeper Jack Hamilton’s view of the shot.

Stewart added: “I find it astonishing to come out and complain about the Joe Dodoo goal, it’s immaterial.

“The decision is correct and he’s complaining as if that was the real issue. They got the decision correct and it wasn’t a goal.”
