A BARRA cottage on sale for just £29,000 has become an unlikely online sensation – attracting 10 times more views than there are people living on the island.
A Facebook post about the detached cottage in Bruernish has been shared 10,113 times compared with Barra’s population of 1,300.
Moira Fuller, whose father is selling the property on Barra, Outer Hebrides, shared an image of the house and a link to the auction site where the property will be sold.
Her photo shows the isolated, detached, grey building situated amid the beautiful wilderness of the island and views of the Atlantic.
People across the UK have shared the post including in London where, for the £600,000 average price of a capital property, you could buy the Barra cottage almost 21 times over.
The amazing bargain price is also put into perspective by a cottage in Morar, in the Scottish Highlands, which recently went on the market for £125,000 despite having a tin roof and no indoor toilet.
Ms Fuller’s Facebook post read: “Another wee share this evening. Dad’s house in Barra has just gone on to auction for December 1st.
“It definitely needs work doing but is a three bed property in a stunning location. Guide price £29,000.
“If you know anyone who’s seriously looking at island living, please share on! Ta.”
The bargain property is in need of some modernisation however features breathtaking views of the green countryside which surrounds it.
The open views and relatively simple cosmetic changes required make the house perfect for property developers or those looking to retire and enjoy an island life.
The house comes with its own porch and spacious living room with a kitchen and shower room downstairs, whilst upstairs there are three bedrooms and a family sized bathroom.
Facebook users have been quick to react to the unusual auction lot.
Andy Walker thought it’d be great “if you want a cheap place as holiday home away from everyone.”
Emma Hale wrote: “I would love to live here!”
Whilst Christine Dawson commented: “I wish. I fell in love with the island.”
A spokeswoman for Wilsons Auctions, who are selling the property, said: “It’s a project property in need of some TLC, however, once completed it could be the perfect home to retire to or make a beautiful holiday home.
“We have had a phenomenal response from this house. This type of property makes for perfect auction stock and is sure to create a buzz in the auction room .
“We are very excited to see what it achieves.”
The Isle of Barra is roughly 60 square kilometres (23 sq miles) and is famed for its golden sandy beaches.
Barra boasts a unique airport, situated in the shallow bay of Traigh Mhòr, which is the only one in the world where scheduled flights use the beach as a runway.
