MORTON striker Gary Oliver insists uncle Jim Duffy deserves all the praise currently coming his way – including being tipped for the Scotland job.

Duffy this week scooped the Championship manager of the month award for October after lifting the Greenock outfit up to third in the table with a run of seven wins and just two defeats from their last 10 outings, including the Betfred Cup semi-final loss to Aberdeen.

The experienced former Dundee, Hibs and Clyde boss has even been credited as a possible future candidate to replace Gordon Strachan – and Oliver is not surprised.

He told Capital City Press: “I’ve not spoken to him about it and it’s not really something he would speak about.

“But he deserves all the plaudits he’s been getting. He’s been fantastic, getting the club up from League One to the Championship and up into third just now.

“That’s a great achievement in itself and to get manager of the month is fantastic for him because it’s not an easy league to win something like that in.

“A few of the boys were talking about it the other day, saying ‘the gaffer’s been tipped for the Scotland job’.

“It doesn’t really surprise me, he deserves all the plaudits he’s getting.”

FEELGOOD

Morton’s six-match unbeaten run in the league will be seriously tested on Saturday afternoon when they host on-form Dundee United, who travel to Cappielow on the back of seven straight wins.

But Oliver is hopeful Ton, who also saw defender Thomas O’Ware lift the player of the month accolade, will be the ones to extend their successful sequence and close the five-point gap to their visitors in second.

The former Hearts youngster added: “There’s a real feelgood factor at the club at the minute. For a team like Morton to win the manager of the month and player of the month awards in the Championship is fantastic.

“It will be a hard game against Dundee United because they’re doing well, but we can close the gap on them if we can win, so it’s a big game.

“I think it will be about who plays better on the day. We just need to make sure we do as well as we can and keep our run going.”
