MARK Kerr admits Falkirk must beat Ayr United if they want to be fighting for the Championship title at the end of the season.
The Bairns have gone four games without a win and have won just one of their last seven matches in a disappointing sequence that includes an IRN-BRU Cup defeat to Saturday’s opponents.
It is a worrying period for Peter Houston’s men, who after stringing five wins together earlier in the campaign, were eyeing the top of the Championship.
They now find themselves nine points adrift of leaders Hibs but have been energised by drawing at Easter Road last weekend when they had to play for over an hour with 10 men following Tom Taiwo’s red card.
Kerr said: “It’s easy to say we did well with 10 men and we were up against it. But carrying it on to Ayr this week is going to be the big thing.
“When you’re on a bad run, you can’t just take the positives out of it when you get a half-decent result.
“It’s when you go into the next one and the next one, and then you can say ‘we’re building’.
IMPRESSED
“That’s what we did do in the first quarter.
“We didn’t have a great start in the first three games, but then we went four, five, six games into it and we were on a run and beating strong teams.”
As well as the Challenge Cup defeat to Ayr at Somerset Park, Falkirk struggled to break down the Honest Men in the league fixture in September.
Kerr added: “I’ve been impressed with Ayr. They knocked the ball about really well against us and they were well organised.
“But they were also a threat going forward, they weren’t like a part-time team that’s just come up into the league and who just sit in and don’t try to cause you any problems.
“They were a good solid team, who had a bit of flair about them, so we’ll not be taking the game lightly.”
