Hibernian midfielder Fraser Fvyie insists Gordon Strachan need look no further than Easter Road to solve Scotland’s defensive woes.
Tottenham Hotspur are the only British club to have conceded less goals than Neil Lennon’s Championship leaders, who have shipped seven, so far this season and Fyvie insists centre-backs Paul Hanlon and Darren McGregor have played a significant role in that feat.
The lack of defenders that are capable of playing at international level has been a concern for Scotland but former Aberdeen and Wigan playmaker Fvyie is adamant that his team-mates are the two of the best in Scotland.
Fyvie, who is hoping to help cement Hibs’ place at the summit in today’s visit of Queen of the South, said: “I think if you can find two better centre halves in Scotland than our two, then come and talk to me.
“Those two have been fantastic all year, they were great last season as well.
“Their size, their stature, their composure on the ball, especially when Paul takes it in.
“Daz probably does the dirty work better than Paul but they blend off each other really well.
“With big Fonts (Liam Fontaine) in there as well they have gelled as a back three.
“And with Daz and Paul being Scottish, I certainly wouldn’t not put their name forward.”
Fyvie also believes competing in the second tier of Scottish football should not block their path to the national team, even though he acknowledges that playing in the Premiership would enhance any hopes they have of playing for their country.
He added: “It’s not unrealistic for players here to be in the Scotland squad.
“It is a big jump from the Championship to international level.
“But if we were to get ourselves into the top league then it would be easier for people to judge them.
“So we need to get ourselves up there and hopefully we can do that.
“And then boys will be looked at in a different way, playing so-called better sides, which is probably right; Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts, St Johnstone, all top sides.
“So it is right they are judged on that.”
