Celtic superfan Jay Beatty “over the moon” after getting signed strip from ‘A German team’

CELTIC superfan Jay Beatty is “over the moon” after getting a signed strip from “A German team”.

Borussia Monchengladbach presented 12-year-old Jay with his very own signed top when they visited Glasgow to play the Hoops in the Champions’ League.

Monchengladbach hit the headlines when they began selling scarves with ‘A German team’ written on them after a sign outside a Glasgow pub went viral.

The pub had given up up on spelling their name and simply dubbed them ‘A German team’ after scoring out their previous attempts to spell the club’s name.

Jay, who has Down’s Syndrome, captured the hearts of the Parkhead faithful when Hoops hero Georgios Samaras picked him up and carried him round the pitch as the team celebrated their league title in 2014.

‘Wee Jay’ was delighted with his new top

The youngster is an ambassador for the Glasgow giants and has met a host of stars including Paolo Nutini and Lionel Messi.

The generous Germans also donated 3,000 euros (£2,693) to the Celtic Foundation as well as the signed top for ‘Wee Jay’, which is to be auctioned off for charity.

Jay’s father, Martin, 45, was grateful to the German club for their kind donation and said: “One of the Borussia Monchengladbach directors gave Jay a strip with his name on which was signed by the whole team.

“We weren’t at the home match against them a couple of weeks ago so we just collected it the other day.

“They’d given it to the Celtic Foundation to pass on to us so we went over to Celtic Park for the picture.”

He continued: “It was totally unexpected but really appreciated. I don’t know how they knew about us but Jay was over the moon with it.

“It’s such a nice gesture and a touch of class. It’s a really nice strip as well.

“I think the plan now is to possibly get it framed and auction it off for charity.”

Monchengladbach beat Celtic 2-0 at Celtic Park and the two teams drew 1-1 on Tuesday night in Germany

Despite the results, Martin said Jay remained positive about his team’s chances of progressing to the knock-out stages and told him: “Daddy it’s all working out nicely. We will just stuff Barcelona and Man City and then we are through.”

Following the pub sign which described them simply as a ‘German team’, Monchengladbach got their own back before the game between the two sides on Tuesday night.

The club’s official Twitter account tweeted an image of a similar looking sign inside the stadium ahead of kick-off which featured various misspellings of ‘A Scottish team’ which were scored out before they decided to just write ‘Borussia vs Celtic’.
