THE REFEREE appointed to Celtic’s key Champions League meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday tonight was branded a ‘liar’ the last time he took charge of the Hoops.

Portuguese whistler Manuel De Sousa was the man in the middle when Celtic defeated Elfsborg in a third round qualifier in the competition in July 2013.

The Parkhead side won the first-leg 1-0 before progressing with a goalless draw in Sweden, but 41-year-old De Sousa came in for massive criticism from Elfsborg captain Anders Svensson.

The 114-times capped Sweden legend was furious at De Sousa’s failure to send off Kelvin Wilson for an alleged elbow on on-loan Celtic striker Mo Bangura in Glasgow.

Svensson said:” Kelvin Wilson was very lucky because he should have got a red card. I asked the ref and he said he didn’t see it – but that’s just a lie because everyone saw it.

“It’s unbelievable that none of the officials saw it. Frankly, if they all didn’t see it, it’s a lie – everyone saw it.”

De Sousa, who has been an international official since 2006, will be taking charge of his third Champions League match of the season, having also overseen Hapoel Beer Sheva’s progress past Olympiakos to their play-off clash with Celtic and Juventus’ 3-0 win away to Dinamo Zagreb.
