KEITH Wright got together with old friends and team-mates on Thursday night to celebrate a quarter of a century since he helped Hibs to a dream Skol Cup victory.

But the Hampden hero of 1991 reckons the current-day history-makers would be well within their rights to host a yearly reunion to revel in May’s Scottish Cup triumph.

The likes of Wright, fellow goal-scorer Tommy McIntyre, Mickey Weir, Murdo MacLeod and Pat McGinlay yesterday commemorated 25 years to the day since they completed the club’s amazing journey from near extinction to silverware.

Having been threatened by a hostile takeover launched by Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer just a year earlier, the ‘team that wouldn’t die’ went on to lift the club’s first trophy in 19 years with a 2-0 win over Dunfermline.

The wait may pale into insignificance beside the 114 years that preceded last season’s long-hoped-for Scottish Cup success against Rangers, but Wright believes the ’91 conquest was still a hugely significant moment in the club’s history.

And he plans to savour every moment as he and hid old colleagues gather again at Easter Road tomorrow, when they will be make a half-time appearance on the pitch during the meeting with St Mirren.

Wright, a boyhood Hibs fan, said: “It’s unbelievable that it’s 25 years since we won the cup. It seems to have gone by in a flash but it will be great to see everyone together again.

“There’s a few I haven’t seen in a long time and it will bring back a lot of happy memories – and the banter won’t take long in coming, I’m sure.

“That was a special day for me, personally. I hadn’t long joined the club and to score a goal at Hampden in a cup win for Hibs was a dream come true.

“But it was also really important for the club. After all that happened with the takeover and everything else, a cup win was an incredible moment.

“It was reward for the hard work of guys like [former chairman] Dougie Cromb and it helped bring the fans together again.

“I’ve heard loads of stories through the years from supporters telling me what happened with them on the day and what it meant to see the club win a cup.

“Watching the Scottish Cup win last season was amazing and I know how the players were feeling to get their hands on a cup at Hampden, even if the Scottish Cup made it all the more special.

“They’ll have that bond for life like we have and I’m sure they’ll come together again in 25 years – though they would probably be right to have a reunion once a year because it was the Scottish Cup!”
