Hibs’ Scottish Cup triumph still thrills Lewis Stevenson – just don’t ask him to watch Rangers game again

LEWIS Stevenson sat through nearly three hours of emotional footage celebrating the greatest game in Hibs’ history – and then insisted he will NEVER watch the match itself.

On Monday night, the Easter Road outfit hosted the premiere of ‘Time For Heroes’, the DVD that has been pieced together to commemorate May’s long-dreamed-of Scottish Cup triumph over Rangers.

The film features the road to Hampden, the build up to the game and the raucous celebrations that attracted over 100,000 onto the streets of Edinburgh, all told from the perspective of the players and management team.

Stevenson, the only player in the club’s history to win two major cups, admits ‘Time For Heroes’ evokes thrilling memories and the presence of Alan Stubbs, John Doolan and Andy ‘Taff’ Holden at Monday’s screening in Leith presented the chance for more reminiscing.

However, the 28-year-old revealed he has not watched the thrilling 3-2 victory over again and is adamant he has no intentions of ever doing so, just in case it brings back bad memories instead.

He told Capital City Press: “I’ve not watched the game back at all. It was nice to see snippets of the game from the film, because you forget what happened, and it brought back some good memories.

“I don’t think I’ll ever watch the game back, though.

“I’m not one for watching games back. It just reminds me of being pulled into meetings after we’ve been beaten.

“I don’t know if I’ve got a mental block when watching games back because of that but I don’t enjoy it.

“You get people that don’t like the sound of their own voice but I don’t like seeing myself playing football. I feel I’m a lot better than I am when I go and watch games back!”

HISTORY

It will live long in the memory of supporters and most of those involved on the day and the DVD launch has been a reminder of the magnitude of the club’s first Scottish Cup success in 114 years.

But such is the nature of football that Stevenson insists the victory has to be consigned to history as the club seeks promotion back to the Premiership.

He added: “It does seem like ages ago. The film includes the whole cup run and there were players who played in the run, like Dom Malonga, who scored against Raith Rovers, who weren’t at the club by the time the final came round.

“But as soon as the new season begins you almost forget about the day.

“You have to move on to new goals. I’m sure in 20 or 30 years I’ll look back and I’m sure it’ll sink in, how big an achievement it was.

“But at this moment we just have to almost forget about it and focus on the task in hand this season.

“The cup’s a great memory but it’s important for the club as a whole to get promoted this season.”

• ‘Time For Heroes’, priced £24.99, is available to order now on the Hibs website and will be available from the club shop from Friday.
