Queen of the South defender Jamie Hamill admits his bid to extract inside information on Irn-Bru Cup opponents Linfield has failed after former Kilmarnock team-mate Sammy Clingan refused to give anything away.
The Doonhamers welcome the Northern Irish club tomorrow in a last-16 tie and Hamill could come face-to-face with midfielder Clingan.
The pair have exchanged texts about the clash but Hamill admits he has been unsuccessful in his bid to glean any titbits from his old colleague.
“I’ve been getting limited information right enough, you don’t get anything back from Sammy.
“We exchanged messages about the game but it’s one of those ones, you don’t give away much information about your team.
“They’ll come over here with a lot of experience. It’s unusual in the sense that they are competing in the competition but we’re looking forward to it, it’s a bit different with a team coming from Northern Ireland.
“It’s good for Scottish football, it’s fresh and it’s a cup game as well.
“I’ve maybe been involved when you’ve played Celtic or Rangers three times in a month, especially if you go to a cup replay.
“It probably takes the boredom away from the fans as well in the sense that they will get to see different players on the pitch.”
Queens currently lead the Scottish Championship by a point over favourites Hibs and Hamill has welcomed manager Gavin Skelton’s decision to take the Irn-Bru Cup seriously.
The former Hearts player added: “It’s good the gaffer has come out and said he wants to do well in this competition.
“I don’t think our team has really changed much this season, our team generally picks itself and we’re trying to build momentum.
“As a player, you want to win every game as well. Hopefully we can stamp our authority on the game and get a wee victory.”
