A BBC sports reporter suffered a hilarious Freudian slip when he told listeners Andy Murray had claimed a “straight sex” victory.
Phil Goodlad’s gaffe came as he was giving listeners to BBC Scotland the latest sporting headlines on John Beattie’s lunchtime show today.
Moments before Goodlad took to the air, the news covered a same-sex army marriage which had taken place overseas.
Goodlad, from Shetland, managed to get through boxer Ricky Burns’ upcoming fight before launching into a report of Murray’s victory at the China Open.
He said: “Andy Murray, in the last few minuted is through to the semi-finals of the China Open.
“He’s beaten Kyle Edmund in straight sex.”
Flustered, he stumbled as he realised his mistake before quickly saying: “Eh, straight sets sorry, in the all-British quarter-final.”
To the sound of background sniggering, host Beattie interjected: “Well that would’ve been a good one, wouldn’t it. I wonder what happened there.”
Goodlad responds: “Do you know the moments when you wish people wouldn’t hear what you said and would just allow you to go on.”
Beattie joked: “Nobody heard you, go on.”
Goodlad then repeated the Murray item, carefully emphasising the words “sets”.
