JACKIE McNAMARA has one game to save his job after overseeing one of the most humiliating defeats in York City’s history.
McNamara is on the brink of tendering his resignation after a horror show against Guiseley on Tuesday evening, succumbing 6-1 to a side that were previously bottom of the Conference and without a win in FIVE MONTHS.
It was the low point of a ten-month reign that has seen York relegated from League Two and their bid to immediately bounce back falter, with McNamara’s men now six games without a victory and just one place above the relegation zone.
McNamara was widely expected to be dismissed this week but, following showdown talks with chairman Jason McGill, he has been given a final opportunity to spark a revival when York travel to Braintree Town on Saturday.
A club statement outlined: “Following a meeting with the chairman this morning, and in light of the disappointing performance and result last night, York City manager Jackie McNamara has considered his position going forward.
“It has been decided that, if the team fails to gain a positive result at Braintree Town on Saturday, the York City manager will tender his resignation.
“The manager will be looking for a passionate and committed reaction from the players after the capitulation at Nethermoor Park on Tuesday evening.”
McNamara’s stint south of the border is threatening to descend into farce – after high-profile comedian Richard Herring compared the embattled Scot to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Herring, presenter of the popular ‘Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast’, mocked the 42-year-old on social media following the hammering at Guiseley.
He tweeted to his 188,000 followers: “York City have had some low points in my many years of supporting them, but I think this may be the lowest. There have been some high points too. I think they drew once.
“Even Jeremy Corbyn can’t believe that Jackie McNamara hasn’t quit.”
The former Partick Thistle and Dundee United boss has also been plagued by off-the-field woes, most notably being ordered to pay a hefty fine for failing to purchase an £86 train ticket as he travelled between Edinburgh and York.
And McNamara has blamed certain “distractions” for York’s capitulation after acknowledging that fans are “baying for blood”.
McNamara said: “It was victimisation and lies and I was talking to my lawyers about it before this game, so it has been a distraction.
“The fans showed their frustration and there were some horrible scenes with them baying for blood. A lot of players couldn’t handle that.”
