Alex Rae reckons he should have been given more time to try and turnaround St Mirren’s poor start to the season.
The former Rangers midfielder was sacked as Buddies manager on September 18 after a 1-1 draw at Dumbarton left the Paisley outfit rooted to the Championship basement after six matches.
But as St Mirren move closer to appointing his successor, the 47-year-old, who replaced Ian Murray last December, admits he is disappointed that the board did not show more faith in him.
Rae, speaking to Ladbrokes News, said: “Six games into a season is not a particularly long time. I think I was the first guy to be sacked in the whole of the UK and from that point of view it was really disappointing.
“We did a decent job at St Mirren, with the win rate we had it was the most successful in recent times.
“We just take it on the chin and wish St Mirren well going forward.
“I’m doing some media stuff and I’ve been invited to do some work with some younger squads. I might get back into some youth stuff in the short term to keep my hand in.
“It’s just been a difficult start but I’m still very optimistic, it’s very much part of my blood so we’ll go again.”
St Mirren have designs on at least being in play-off contention this season but Rae admits his replacement will have to work under difficult financial restrictions.
He said: “I think they have to reassess and rebuild, behind the scenes as well, and try and generate some money.
“Without money it will be very difficult to put these things in place, there was no scouting network at St Mirren.
“It’s going to be tough for St Mirren going forward but they’ve got the enthusiasm and with the fans’ backing, it may well work for them.”
