CELTIC’S mauling at the hands of brilliant Barcelona has seen them enter the top 10 of worst ever UEFA Champions League defeats – however the Hoops can take heart from the fact they avoided matching the ignominy of Malmo and Besiktas.
The Scottish champions join the likes of Zilina, BATE Boris and Basel in suffering a defeat by a seven-goal margin in the group stage of European football’s biggest competition.
However, they managed to stem the tide before Barca grabbed what would have been a record-equalling eighth, matching last year’s 8-0 win for Real Madrid over Malmo, who had eliminated Celtic in the qualifying round.
Liverpool also claimed an 8-0 triumph over Besiktas in 2007, with Yossi Benayoun, Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch among the goals.
