Scotland Under-21 striker Oliver McBurnie tipped for a bright future at Swansea

Scotland Under-21 striker Oliver McBurnie has been told he has a big future at Swansea after notching a brace on his debut for the Swans.

The 20-year-old set up fellow countryman Jay Fulton for the first in Tuesday’s 3-1 EFL Cup victory at Peterborough before finding the net twice himself.

McBurnie has already become a regular in Ricky Sbragia’s Scotland Under-21 squad after being called up the forthcoming Euro qualifiers against Macedonia and Ukraine and Swansea manager Francesco Guideline insists the youngster has bags of potential.

Speaking to swanseacity.net, he said: “Oliver is improving. He has been working with us for the last two months.

“I am happy for him because he is a clever player. He is a good, young player.

“On Tuesday evening we showed good, young players. Oli and Jay Fulton, too, worked hard and this is important for our club.”

McBurnie, who moved to the Welsh outfit last summer after starting his career at Bradford City, was delighted with his maiden appearance for the club.

He said: “As debuts go, it’s not too bad – three would have been even better.

“I was happy to be involved in all of the goals and help the team win. It was a good opportunity for me.

“I’ve been involved a lot in pre-season while I scored for the Under-23s the other day. I finally got my chance and it was nice to make the most of it.

“A lot of the boys who haven’t played much felt they had things to prove.

“It was a good opportunity for those players to impress.

“Myself and Jay were talking before the game and we said it was imperative that we win because it’s the main source of minutes for us.

“The further we get in this competition, hopefully the more minutes we get. It’s great for every club to have a cup run.”
