Friends raise almost £4,000 in 24 hours for murdered Gary Weir

ALMOST £4,000 has been raised in 24 hours for the funeral of murder victim Gary Weir.

The 24-year-old died after an apparent stabbing to the chest during a brawl outside Shettleston Juniors social club in Glasgow.

Yesterday morning friends set up a crowdfunding page to help give Gary, known to many as Bigit, the “send off he deserves”.

In one day alone, generous friends have managed to raise over £3,600 to help the Weir family with costs – smashing the initial £500 target.

Hundreds of generous friends have taken to the Just Giving page to donate towards Gary’s funeral.

More than 167 people have donated – including £500 from staff at Shettleston Juniors club who wrote: “Constantly reliving this nightmare, wishing we could have done something more.”

Caron Williams started the page in memory of the Easterhouse man by paying tribute to “a great boy loved by everyone”.

She wrote: “Am asking everyone could they please donate a small amount to this page as Gary Weir (Bigit) was a great boy, loved by everyone.

“He was sadly taken from his family at just 24 years of age. I would like to help the family to give him the send off he deserves.”

Hundreds of friends and family took to the page to post tributes to the young Celtic fan.

Grace Curran Church wrote: “Well done everyone, if anybody deserves this send off Bigit does.”

Tracey Cooper said: “Such a tragic waste of a young life. No one deserves to go out for a night out and not to return home to their family. RIP.”

And Gemma Regan wrote: “Will never forget your cheeky smile and all the really bad haircuts we had as kids. Love you big guy.”

Three men – aged 23, 35 and 26 – were seriously injured in the incident at 12.35am on Sunday, but were discharged from hospital after treatment.

Police Scotland have confirmed the investigation into Gary’s death is ongoing.
