VIDEO has captured the moment a police officer in New York labelled the Rangers captain a ‘snitch’.
Lee Wallace has been the subject of taunts from rival fans since the Scottish Cup Final last May, when fans stormed the pitch after the full-time whistle.
The 29-year-old was one of the players attacked by a fan as he walked off following his side’s 3-2 loss to Hibs.
A large-scale police inquiry was launched and a number of arrests made as cops hunted for supporters who harassed the players.
Supporters began to dub the Scotland international a “grass” as a result – an insult which now seems to have spread across the pond.
The four second clip, which appears on a Facebook page called Scottish football away fans, shows an NYPD officer standing next to a tourist amongst the hustle of New York.
The copper, who’s wearing the recognisable uniform with an ‘NYPD’ cap and sunglasses, points and says: “Lee Wallace is a snitch” before smiling at the camera.
The other man looks like he has his arm around the officer and gives the thumbs up after he calls Wallace a ‘snitch’.
It is believed that the police officer was asked to repeat the phrase – widely used on social media following the controversial game – without understanding its full meaning.
The clip has been viewed over 55,000 times with over 1,400 likes and 700 shares and was quick to spark debate between rival supporters.
Ronnie Kane wrote: “Even when Celtic fans go abroad, Rangers are all they want to talk about.”
Thomas Macdonald commented: “They even take their obsession on holidays with them!”
Whilst Colin Muir said: “New level of obsession.”
But Michael Yule commented: “America’s finest know he’s a grass too.”
And Josh McGinn said: “Rangers fans get really annoyed easily don’t they?”
It was reported that up to six Rangers players and their assistant manager, David Weir, were attacked by yobs after the Scottish Cup Final.
The final saw Hibs lift the trophy for the first time in 114 years thanks to David Gray’s stoppage time header.
