FORMER Dundee United keeper Marc McCallum is thrilled to have the chance to make it south of the border – even if he has the comfort of a healthy Scottish contingent at Plymouth Argyle.
The 23-year-old has signed for Derek Adams’ side after a successful trial spell following his decision to move on from Livingston at the end of last season.
The former Scotland under-19 cap has joined a squad that includes fellow Scots David Goodwillie and Gary Miller, and is overseen by the management duo of compatriots Adams and assistant Craig Brewster.
And the former Forfar, Peterhead and Arbroath loan player is delighted to find a home from home in England.
He said: “I think up in Scotland, a lot of Scottish lads aim to play in England, and it’s a great opportunity for myself to come and try to prove myself down here.
“In Scotland, don’t get me wrong, the game’s great but, for me, I’ve always wanted to play in England.
“I know David Goodwillie. I think Derek (Adams) was Ross County manager when I was at Dundee United, so he roughly knew where I was.
Stick together
“Brew (Craig Brewster) was at Dundee United, he was manager as well in the past, so he roughly knew where I was.
“So it’s great that the Scottish boys kind of stick together.”
McCallum will start behind number one Luke McCormick and Frenchman Vincent Dorel in the pecking order but, after playing 30 times for Livingston last season, is eager to compete strongly for a starting place.
He told www.pafc.co.uk: “I’m only 23 but I’ve played a lot of games. I’ve played a lot of matches so I’ve got a lot of experience and I’m hoping I can use that and push as hard as I can, and push Luke and Vincent as hard as I can.
“Derek (Adams) told me that he’s wanting the keepers to push each other, so I’m looking forward to getting in and seeing what’s happening.”
