Pep-talk from new Inverness Caley Thistle boss helps inspire Iain Vigurs’ ‘perfect’ hat-trick

IAIN Vigurs produced the ideal response to Richie Foran’s pre-match pep-talk – but insists he is too scared of his new boss to ask for another.

Vigurs netted the ‘perfect’ hat-trick in Tuesday night’s 5-1 hammering of Dunfermline – scoring with his right foot, left foot and then head as Inverness Caley Thistle went top of Betfred Cup Group C.

Foran revealed afterwards he had spoken to the 28-year-old before the game in a bid to encourage a step-up in performance from the former Ross County and Motherwell attacker.

But, even though the ploy worked a treat, Vigurs says he has good reason to avoid another heart-to-heart with Foran.

He said: “The manager spoke to me and told me I was due a performance – so he wasn’t putting me under any pressure!

“I was delighted to come away with the three goals after him saying that.

“I wasn’t happy with my performance against Dundee United but I was happier against Dunfermline.

“My all-round game was a bit sloppy, but it’s still early in the season.

“But I won’t be asking for another pep-talk before the next game because the manager scares me!”

The hat-trick was Vigurs’ first as a professional footballer and at the least his first since primary school.

However, the former Scotland under-19 cap was quick to praise his team-mates for a result that leaves them favourites to top the group as they go into their final tie against Arbroath.

He added: “That was my first hat-trick, and a perfect hat-trick, so I couldn’t have done it any better!

“The boys were surprised I scored with my right foot – and with my head!

“It was a great night for me, personally.

“It’s my first in professional football but it’s been that long since I was a young boy I can’t remember if I’ve scored another one – we’re definitely going back to primary school.

“Credit to the rest of the boys – Scott Boden up top for making the first one happen, Jake Mulraney for winning the free-kick for the second one and Carl Tremarco has put in a great ball for the third.

“But the most important thing was the three points.”
