Pictures taken in the dead of night show the 55-year-old wearing pale trousers and a blue long-sleeved shirt, accessorised with a large gold watch and ring.

Carlyle, who now sports a moustache, could be seen running through a darkened street with a white sheet held over his head.

He approaches a dark bin, lifts the lid and throws the sheet inside, before walking away.

Others stars from the original cast also arrived on set yesterday to start filming for the hotly-anticipated sequel.

Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor was snapped beaming at each other as they queued for lunch during filming.

The pair infamously fell out 16 years ago when Boyle cast Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach ahead of the Scotsman.

They looked to have buried the hatchet as they were seen chatting happily to one another.

Trainspotting 2 takes place 20 years on from the first and will be loosely based on author Irvine Welsh’s follow-up novel Porno.

The sequel to the 1996 hit film is set to be released next January.
