IRN Bru is the secret to keeping young actors awake while filming at night, actor Sam Heughan has revealed.

The Outlander star, 36, shared on Twitter yesterday a picture of French actor Roman Berrux, 14, holding two bottles of Scotland’s other national drink and told his 235,000 followers: “How to keep French boys awake during night shoots, sugar!!!”

The teenager, who plays French emigrant Fergus Claudel Fraser in the television show, endorsed the comment by tweeting in reply: “Irn bru is the best drink on heart.”

Fans were engaged in the discussion, as the picture was retweeted almost 600 times and received more than 4,000 likes in less than 24 hours.

Many agreed with the stars. One follower said: “We Scots know how important Irn Bru is in life,” while another even placed the sugar carbonated above Scotland’s first national drink:“Well done, better than whisky,” he wrote.

Others were keen to share advice: “Parent lesson no 1: never give them the sugar hit” and “make sure he brushes his teeth!”

Someone also suggested another “Scottish learning experiences” for the French boy: “Next thing it’ll be “bacon rolls” to help him grow big and strong.”

Berrux’s picture was posted under the headline “Happy birthday #JAMMF”, to mark the birthday of Heughan’s Outlander alter ego Jamie Fraser, one day after the actor’s own birthday.

Now in its second season, critically acclaimed television drama Outlander, based on a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, tells the story of Claire Randall, played by Caitriona Balfe, who time travels from 1945 to 18th century Scotland.
