Jackie McMamara admits he needs a ‘miracle’ as his York City side face having their relegation from the English Football League confirmed tonight.
The weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Hartlepool, coupled with a victory for fellow strugglers Stevenage, has left the Minstermen 11 points adrift of safety with only four games to play in League Two.
Even if York beat promotion-chasing Portsmouth this evening, results elsewhere in the division could send the Bootham Crescent outfit through the league trapdoor.
Former Dundee United boss McNamara, who has been told that his job is safe by chairman Jason McGill, said: “We need a miracle and it’s very difficult, especially when you give teams opportunities like we did again.”
Speaking to the York Press, he added: “We lost four points in the two games before and we’ve only got ourselves to blame by doing things wrongly.”
McNamara took over the reins last November after losing his job at Tannadice but has only been able to guide York to four victories.
