David Hopkirk hopes League One champions can stay together after signing new Dunfermline deal

DAVID Hopkirk has handed Dunfermline a huge boost by penning a new two-year contract to stay at the club.

The former Hamilton Accies and Queen of the South attacker has joined defenders Lewis Martin and Ryan Williamson, and goalkeepers Sean Murdoch and Cammy Gill in committing his future to the Pars since they sealed the League One title last month.

Manager Allan Johnston has confessed he has his work cut out in keeping his promotion-winning squad together for life in the Championship, with Partick Thistle tracking skipper Andy Geggan and the likes of top scorer Faissal El Bakhtaoui and winger Joe Cardle attracting interest.

However, Hopkirk, who joined the Fifers from Annan Athletic in January last year, is hopeful of enjoying the fruits of this year’s labours after agreeing to stay at East End Park until May 2018.

He said: “When I first came I said that I wanted to win promotion and earn another full-time contract. I have done that now and, given a run of games, I think that I am good enough for the Championship.

“If we can keep the squad together and bring in some better players hopefully we can do well.

“I had a few options elsewhere but I enjoy it at Dunfermline. It is a great club, a big club and the boys are brilliant.

“Hopefully we can keep them together – I enjoy it here so there is no point in moving on. I am glad to be signing for another two years.”
