St Mirren manager Alex Rae insists Buddies are still not safe

St Mirren manager Alex Rae admits he is refusing to consider that his side are safe in the Championship – despite the Buddies being ten points clear of Livingston.

Rae has overseen an upturn in the Paisley club’s fortunes since replacing Ian Murray just before Christmas with a 50 per cent win ratio but the former Rangers defender admits he is still looking nervously over his shoulder.

St Mirren ParkThe Lions currently occupy the relegation play-off place and Rae, whose side travel to Alloa this afternoon, admits there is still work to be done.

He said: “We’re ten points clear and Livi has a game in hand but we need to keep focussing, we can’t get complacent and I wouldn’t like to get dragged down.

“With the run in we have, we have Alloa, Hibs, Falkirk, Morton, Dumbarton and Rangers and I wouldn’t like to be going into the last couple of games thinking we need points.”

Rae will be allowed to stand in the dugout today despite being offered a one-match ban by the Scottish FA after being sent to the stand by referee Barry Cook during Tuesday’s loss to Raith Rovers.

Rae, who has until next Friday to respond to the complaint, admits he has to learn to control himself on the sidelines.

He added: “I was a wee bit perplexed with some of the decisions. He was over having a go at my assistant manager David Farrell and I expressed what I felt about his performance and I’ve ended up in the stands.

“From my point of view, I need to appreciate what we’re dealing with on a weekly basis and not react because it’s not going to do my club any good, me sitting in the stand.

“I probably need to react a bit better, it is a learning curve for myself.

“It’s getting that balance. I have a passion for football, I play five-a-sides with the boys and I still have that passion to succeed, to do whatever it takes to win and I want my team to have that as well.”
