VIDEO: Idiot goes wrong way at roundabout

SHOCKING footage shows the moment an elderly man drives the wrong way around a busy roundabout – and then down a ‘no entry’ slip road.

James Johnston from Bathgate, West Lothian, caught the jaw-dropping manoeuvre on Sunday morning as he travelled along the A89.

As he approaches a busy junction, a white Hyundai i20 hatchback can be seen driving anti-clockwise around a roundabout.

Instead of stopping, the elderly driver continues to weave in and out of vehicles as shocked drivers slam on the brakes.

And rather than trying to exit the roundabout safely, he then decides to drive down a ‘no entry’ slip road towards more oncoming vehicles.

James, who recorded the footage, can be heard shouting “What the hell are you doing” as the man carries out the dangerous move.

The driver also does not appear to notice when James yells “It’s a no entry” as he exits the roundabout.

The 30-second clip was shared by Scotland’s Worst Drivers, a website which shames bad driving north of the border.

James said he believes the man may have been “confused”, which resulted in him driving in the wrong direction.

He said: “It happened on the A89 Edinburgh road towards Bathgate, at the roundabout opposite Kaim Park.

“The elderly driver either got confused or just wasn’t paying attention, and drove the wrong way on the roundabout into traffic.

“He then proceeded through a ‘no entry’, driving into more oncoming traffic. I have no idea what the guy was thinking…I was gobsmacked.”

A spokesman for Scotland’s Worst Drivers said: “The fact this driver never attempted to correct his mistake, and then drove down a closed road, rings alarm bells to me.

“I find it concerning that he appears unaware of what he is doing and carries on as all is normal.

“This again raises the need to introduce compulsory retesting for elderly drivers.”

The busy A89 road runs from High Street in Glasgow to Newbridge in Edinburgh, passing through Coatbridge, Bathgate and Broxburn.

Despite dozens of other cars on the road at the time of the incident, it appears that no-one was injured as a result of the driver’s actions.

In August last year, another driver was captured on dashcam traveling the wrong way down a slip road before squeezing past other vehicles and reversing onto a roundabout.

The dodgy manoeuvre appeared to be an attempt to avoid a detour on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
