New Kilmarnock manager Lee Clark admits he is looking forward to getting his methods across during an uninterrupted week on the training pitch.

After being appointed as Gary Locke’s successor last Monday, the former Birmingham City and Huddersfield boss adopted a watching brief as caretaker boss Lee McCulloch oversaw the Scottish Cup defeat to Rangers just 24 hours later.

But Clark was encouraged by his dugout debut in Saturday’s goal-less draw at home to Dundee and the 43-year-old is keen to make the most of his time with the players ahead of the weekend’s trip to Hearts.

Clark said: “As a manager and coaching staff, when players are taking on board what you’ve asked for in the short period of time that you’ve been there, you can only be pleased because you have further time to worth with them – and they’re receptive to my ideas.

“Now I get a free week to work with them, which means I can improve them even more in all aspects – the fitness, the tactical and technical side, so I’m looking forward to the week ahead.

“Saturday’s clean sheet followed on from the two that Peter (Leven) and Lee achieved at Ibrox and Motherwell so it’s showing consistency.”

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Clark added: “Without a shadow of a doubt it gives me optimism because we’re on a little bit of a decent run.

“That’s four good performances on the bounce. I know we lost in the replay to Rangers, but the level of performance has been good – it’s been consistent.”
