Peter Houston hoping ‘fresh challenge’ will help Kieran Duffie kick-start career after Falkirk departure

Peter Houston is hopeful Kieran Duffie can kick-start his career with a ‘fresh challenge’ after leaving Falkirk.

The full-back has suffered an injury-ravaged last two years, playing just one match in the final few months two seasons ago and then managing only 23 appearances last term.

Without an outing this season, the 23-year-old was released during last month’s transfer window to allow him to find a new club.

Houston has praised the former Scotland under-21 internationalist, who made more than 160 appearances for the club and featured in last year’s Scottish Cup final, but believes the parting of ways was best for both parties.

The Bairns boss said: “It was me who gave him his last two-year contract, but if I look at the 18 months or so I’ve only had three or four months from him. It’s just unfortunate.

“He was a good player for me in that time and I knew he was a good player in the past, from when he played against Dundee United.

“But you can’t keep a player when you never know when you’re going to be able to play him and he maybe needs a new, fresh challenge.

“I wish him all the best. He’s been a good servant to Falkirk Football Club. He played in the Scottish Cup final and probably played with the injury he’s got now.

“But we move on and you just hope he gets himself fit and gets a club.”
