Former Celtic striker Tony Watt has been forced to return to Charlton after Cardiff City were hit with a transfer embargo.
The 22-year-old initially joined the Bluebirds on loan in November and scored two goals in nine appearances.
City manager Russell Slade was keen to secure the former Scotland Under-21 internationalist on a permanent deal this month.
But a proposed £2 million deal collapsed when signing restrictions were dished out on the Welsh club for a breach of Financial Fair Play rules, and Charlton refused to extend Watt’s loan.
Cardiff chief executive Ken Choo said: “We put it on the table but they were not interested in the loan. They said no.”
