Ross County clashes prove Dunfermline are on track for promotion, says Andy Geggan

Andy Geggan insists Dunfermline’s Scottish Cup clashes with Ross County proved they can be more than a match for top Premiership sides.

Now, he is desperate for them to go on and show beyond doubt they are head and shoulders above the rest of League One.

The Fifers battled to a 2-2 draw with County at East End Park last Saturday, with Staggies manager Jim McIntyre admitting his Premiership side had ‘dodged a bullet’ by living to fight another day in the tie.

In Tuesday’s replay, Dunfermline again made a mockery of their third-tier status to push their Highland hosts all the way in a 1-0 defeat.

Geggan, whose dedication to the cause left him with three stitches in a head wound in midweek, is adamant the East End Park men deserved more.

But the midfielder insists the County double-header, and the win over Dundee and extra-time defeat to Dundee United in the League Cup this term, proves the League One leaders are right on track to step back up the divisions.

He said: “I thought over the two games we were the better team, especially in the first game.

“That’s a top-six Premiership team we were playing, and they’ve been flying as well.

“It just shows you what level we could be at.

“Jim McIntyre said they dodged a bullet in the first game and in the second game he said we stopped them from playing, which we did.

“We’re disappointed not to have gone through but we can take massive positives from the way we played.

“In the last two cup games against Premiership opposition, against Dundee United and Ross County, we can take positives out of the two of them.

Together

“It just shows you if we can keep these players together it’s going to be a right good team.

“The main thing is getting out of this division first.”

Geggan joined Dunfermline in summer 2012, just after relegation from the Premier League.

What was supposed to be a promotion campaign the next season turned into a nightmare as the club was plunged into administration the following March.

Having come through those dark days, including a second successive relegation, Geggan is desperate for the sweet taste of success.

The 28-year-old added: “It would be absolutely amazing to win promotion this season.

“I suppose I’ve been here through it all, from all the rubbish that went on with administration. The change from that moment to now is incredible.

“If we do get it, it will mean a lot to the players but, of course, to the fans as well, and the board, who have kept the club together.”
