Skipper David Gray giving Hibs concern ahead of crucial clash with Raith Rovers

Hibernian will assess skipper David Gray in the next 24 hours before deciding whether the ‘warrior’ can face Raith Rovers this weekend.

The former Manchester United defender had to be substituted at half-time in Monday’s 4-2 defeat to Rangers after sustaining a nasty head knock during the first-half at Ibrox.

The 27-year-old was sick during the interval and was sorely missed in the second-half as the capital side were forced to move centre-half Darren McGregor over to right-back in his place.

Gray is an influential figure and head coach Alan Stubbs will be keen to have him restored to the team for the visit of Raith as Hibs bid to overcome the bitter blow of losing to Rangers and falling three points behind their title rivals – and subsequently below Falkirk on goal difference.

However, the Easter Road boss knows from painful experience that Gray will have to be carefully monitored.

He said: “Dave was unfortunate, just an innocuous clash of heads. At the time, the doc said he was just a little bit groggy getting up – he looked like he was going to be okay.

“Then he was sick at half-time and we knew then that he couldn’t carry on.

“He’s okay, fine. I spoke to him at about 10 o’clock on Monday night, at home, and I spoke to him again on Tuesday morning and he was feeling better.

“He’s caught one right in the side of the temple. I’ve had a couple of those before and they’re not nice, believe me.

“But Dave’s Dave, he’s a warrior and he’s a fighter.

“We’ll see how he is for Saturday but obviously the next day or so will determine where we are on that.”
