Steven Craig backs Falkirk to challenge Rangers and Hibs for title but insists Dumbarton can beat the Bairns

Steven Craig believes Falkirk can push Rangers and Hibs all the way for the title this season – but insists it would still be no shock if Dumbarton bring them back down to earth today.

The Bairns have blown the Championship race wide open with a draw against Hibs and last weekend’s stunning 2-1 triumph over Rangers.

And Craig, who began his senior career at Falkirk in 2000, reckons his old club can be a match for the league’s big two on their day.

But the former Motherwell, Aberdeen, Livingston and Ross County striker is adamant that, after four games undefeated, the Sons can prove their own credentials this afternoon.

He said: “Falkirk are an excellent side. I think that on their day they’re up there with Rangers and Hibs, but squad-wise Rangers and Hibs are in a different league.

“Peter Houston has got Falkirk really well organised and he’s brought in some really good players in key areas.

“They’ve got a really good blend of youth and experience.

“To have taken four points off the big two in their last two games proves what a good team they are.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they were still up there at the top with the other two at the end of the season.

“But, at the same time, I think if we were to go there and get something it wouldn’t really be a shock.

“They’re flying high after beating Rangers but we are proving we are a good team as well and it’s just been about finding that consistency.

Form

“It’s two teams that are massively in form and hopefully we can both prove that by putting on a good game.”

Dumbarton were looking like relegation fodder earlier in the season, when – after beating Hibs and St Mirren early on – they lost 10 of their next 13 matches.

But, after crucial wins over Alloa and St Mirren, and last Saturday’s draw with Livingston, Stevie Aitken’s side are looking up.

Craig added: “That’s seven points from our last nine. We’ve dug out some massive results and it sets us up well for this one.

“It’s such a tight league. A few weeks ago we were miles adrift of Queen of the South and now we’re in seventh and only four behind them and they’ll be looking over their shoulders at us now.”
