Family affair put on hold as Derek Young seeks Forfar Athletic boost against brother Darren’s Albion Rovers

Derek Young admits he has been getting more pleasure out of his brother Darren’s results in recent times than his own.

But the Forfar Athletic midfielder insists that has to change this afternoon.

Forfar travel to face Albion Rovers, where Darren is boss, and do so in a state of shock following the sacking of Dick Campbell last weekend after seven years at the club.

Derek admits the players have been left ’embarrassed’ by the popular gaffer’s departure but, with Stewart Petrie taking over on an interim basis, is experienced enough to know the show must go on.

With Albion third in the table and on a run of just two defeats in their last 10 league games, the Loons would probably have picked a different challenge as they bid to recover.

But for Derek, who spent a decade playing with his older brother at Aberdeen and then Dunfermline, a spot of sibling rivalry adds even more spice to the occasion.

The 35-year-old said: “We’re looking forward to it. It’s obviously a good day for myself and Darren, family-wise.

“The only down side of it is we’re going through a wee bit of a sticky situation where the team isn’t playing too well, and Darren’s team are flying at the moment.

“So, it’ll be a tough game, but we beat them at the start of the season and hopefully we can do it again.

“It was good that day, because both of us were playing, and in the middle of the park as well.

“After our score on a Saturday, the first thing I look for is Darren’s result.

“And, unfortunately, I’ve been getting more enjoyment out of Albion Rovers’ results than I have my own in the last wee while.

“But, this Saturday, his team can take a back seat. We’ll have the three points if we can manage it.”

Young has spent the last 18 months at Forfar and was part of the team that came within a whisker of promotion to the Championship last season.

However, he knows this term has not been good enough and, although it might be too late to save Campbell’s job, he is desperate to see the Loons turn things around.

He added: “It’s the end of an era and we’re gutted the manager’s away, but there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it now; we just have to get on with it.

“I’ve known Dick for years, so I was gutted, but the chairman and the board have made their decision and we have to get on with it.

“It’s a bit embarrassing as well, because the players have to take a good bit of the blame, but we just have to get on with the game and hopefully pick up three points.”
