Dumbarton defender Mark Docherty braced for “bizarre” afternoon in Alloa ahead of decisive December

Mark Docherty believes December will define Dumbarton’s season – starting with his emotional return to Alloa.

The Sons have won just one of their last 13 outings and, following a 4-0 defeat against Rangers in midweek, find themselves second-bottom of the Championship, just six points ahead of the Wasps

Docherty believes the next few weeks will be pivotal

Docherty knows a defeat at the Indodrill will drag them further into the dogfight, ahead of a rematch in the Scottish Cup on Tuesday and subsequent league fixtures against fellow strugglers St Mirren and Livingston.

However, the 27-year-old reckons a positive Festive period could kick-start their season.

He said: “December is the month which could define our season. If we pick up points in December then we can look forward to the rest of the season and push away from that bottom half of the table.

“If things don’t go our way, then things could get very difficult.

“The Festive period is always busy, it is always vital. But this time it is even more important because we get that chance to play the teams around us.”

Bizarre

Having enjoyed a special three years at Alloa, spanning two spells, Docherty is braced for a surreal experience in Clackmannanshire.

He added: “Walking into the away dressing room will be bizarre because I have wonderful memories from that club and built a lot of relationships there.

“I was a wee bit of a fans’ favourite too! It would be nice to get a good reception from the fans. I spent a long time there and enjoyed some great nights – things like beating Rangers and retaining our Championship status in the playoff final – so hopefully I get a wee clap.

“It will be weird playing against them at the Indodrill, but I’ve got to put that to one side and focus on getting three points for Dumbarton.”
