Celtic’s Europa League conquerors Molde are facing an enforced break from European football after failing to secure a top four place in the Norwegian top-flight.
Despite having already qualified for the last 16 of this season’s Europa League after beating the Hoops home and away in Group A, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have fallen short in the Tippeliegaen.
Molde wrapped up their domestic campaign with a 3-0 victory at Start on Sunday but have only managed to finish sixth, 17 points adrift of domestic champions Rosenborg.
They will now face at least a one season absence from European football unless they can win the Europa League.
The champions of Europe’s second competition will be handed entry to next term’s Champions League.
Molde have been the surprise package in the Europa League after racking up wins against Celtic and Fenerbahce to establish a five point lead at the top of their section.
