Colin Cameron sacking needed to save Berwick Rangers’ season, says chairman

Berwick Rangers chairman Brian Porteous insists the sacking of Colin Cameron gave him no ‘satisfaction’ – but was necessary to try and rescue the club’s season.

The Shielfield Park board was due to meet last night (Tuesday) to discuss the way ahead following their decision to relieve Cameron of his duties in the wake of Saturday’s 4-1 defeat away to Montrose.

The Borderers currently sit seventh in the League Two table and are out of the Scottish Cup after two wins and five defeats from their last 10 outings, but could have gone second-top had they won at the weekend.

Robbie Horn, the former Berwick number two and current Bonnyrigg Rose boss, and Neil Oliver, the club’s under-20s manager and former Duns and Coldstream boss, are amongst the names being considered by the Wee Gers, who are understood to have received around a dozen applications since Cameron’s departure.

Porteous said: “It’s a horrible job to get rid of a manager, it didn’t give me any satisfaction at all. I’d got quite friendly with Colin, he’s a great guy to work with and probably the best manager I have worked with, to be honest.

“We spoke twice or thrice a week and he kept us informed, and I hope he gets back into the game.

“Unfortunately, though, the results haven’t been going our way and we’ve had a couple of heavy defeats and lost a lot of goals.

“The board felt we could maybe still rescue the season if we changed things now.

“What we felt was that someone new coming in would be able to assess the squad before the January transfer window, so we could hopefully make some funds available to bring a couple of new players in.

“There’s been quite a few applications already and we’re meeting to decide what’s going to happen next.”
