Carlos Carvalhal’s ambitious side are also only three points adrift of the play-offs in the English Championship and Scotland cap Wallace, who joined from Burnley during the summer, was delighted to play his part in the shock win over the Gunners.

Wallace said: “It was a brilliant result. That was for the fans. They have waited a long time for a result like that.

“It’s early days yet. We have had a good start and we are going well at the moment.

“But it is up to us to keep working hard and hopefully good things will come.”

Scotland midfielder Barry Bannan also played a pivotal role in defeating Arsenal.

Bannan said: “It’s brilliant, to beat a Premier League side of that quality is going to add to the confidence we’ve already got.

“I couldn’t have imagined a result like that, we had a game plan but we went out there as underdogs. We tried to fight for our lives and make it as uncomfortable as possible.

“The work ethic was outstanding and if you do that it makes it uncomfortable for the other team.

“We’re on a good run at the minute and beating a top Premier League team will add to that confidence.”
