Scotland are the second highest FIFA ranked country to have been completely ruled out of qualification for Euro 2016.
The Netherlands, who are positioned some 16 places above Gordon Strachan’s side in 14th, are regarded as the biggest European team to miss out on next summer’s finals in France after finishing fourth in Group A.
Hosts France were exempt from the elimination process, with 23 of the 53 countries that took part in the qualifiers making up the rest of the numbers next summer.
The group campaign came to an end on Tuesday, with the top two sides from each section sealing an automatic berth at the finals, while Turkey progressed as the best third-placed team.
Eight countries will go head-to-head for the final four places in next month’s play-offs, with three of those teams, Sweden (45), Slovenia (46) and Ireland (54) all ranked lower than Scotland in the FIFA world rankings.
