Luxury apartment which boasts Edinburgh Castle as it’s neighbour comes on the market

A LUXURY apartment has come on the market in Edinburgh’s top neighbourhood – right next to the city’s iconic 12th century castle.

11/2 Ramsay Garden sits at the very top of the capital’s Royal Mile, at the gates of the castle once dubbed “the most besieged place in Great Britain.”

The £895,000 three bedroom home matches the castle’s sweeping panoramic views of New Town from their shared vantage point atop an extinct volcano.

But the new keyholders of the flat may need to pick up a pair of earplugs, as the building also overlooks the castle’s esplanade, where the musical military tattoo is played out for one month every year.

The three bedroom property has been dubbed “Edinburgh’s most impressive address.”

Situated at the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the block of apartments shares the road with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Scottish Parliament, St Gile’s Cathedral and the High Court.

The stunning family home features three bedrooms – all with en suite bathrooms – as well as two reception rooms, a study and access to private residential gardens.

It also features an impressive balcony – accessible through the drawing room – looking out over central Edinburgh.

The new homeowner can take in a bird’s eye view over Prince’s St Gardens and the National Gallery – right across to the Firth of Forth, Fife and the hills of the Trossachs.

Its description by Savills – the agent managing the sale – reads: “Standing proudly in the lee of Edinburgh Castle and forming an integral part of the city’s skyline, Ramsay Garden is perhaps Edinburgh’s most impressive address.

“Situated at the very heart of the capital, the property is just minutes from Princes Street, the Royal Mile and Waverley Railway Station.”

The luxury property – recently renovated – was built on the site of an octagonal house owned by Scots poet and wigmaker Allan Ramsay the Elder.

Ramsay built his home in the shadow of the castle in 1733 – but Ramsay Gardens as it is today was built in 1892, as student accommodation for the university’s divinity school.

The building was designed by Sydney Mitchell – a prominent architect who also had a hand in designing several asylums for the Board of Lunacy in Scotland.

In spite of Mitchell’s work on the building, it is widely credited to famed Scots town planner Patrick Geddes, who pioneered the renovation of the Royal Mile.

Built in the Arts and Craft style – the property is particularly notable for its red and white exterior, which stands out against the castle’s weathered brown battlements when viewed from Princes St.

Ben Fox – the agent managing the sale for Savills – said: “Ramsay Garden occupies an exclusive location right next to Edinburgh Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks.

“The property has exceptional panoramic views and we have had interest in the property from people all over the world.”
