Hearts director of football Craig Levein has admitted that the Tynecastle club will not be signing former Crystal Palace winger Jerome Thomas after talks broke down over personal terms.
The 32-year-old one-time Arsenal, West Brom, Charlton and Portsmouth player had been training with the Gorgie outfit following his release at Selhurst Park in May.
Neilson conceded on Friday that Hearts had no chance of tabling the kind of terms that Thomas would have been used to in the English top-flight, but he hoped the offer to help the forward develop as a coach would tempt him to sign a contract.
Levein, however, has revealed that their pursuit of Thomas has now been called off.
Levein tweeted: “Jerome won’t be signing. Couldn’t agree on terms.
“If something interesting comes onto the radar we may strengthen. If not Jan.”
Speaking at the tail end of last week, Neilson admitted that Thomas impressed in training.
Neilson said: “You can see in training he is a top player.
“He would be a great addition to not only the squad but the coaching department as well because of the experience he brings.”
