Scotland winger Tim Visser just second to go Dutch in history of Rugby World Cup

BY IAIN COLLIN – Capital City Press

Scotland winger Tim Visser will create history as just the second Dutch-born player to feature at the Rugby World Cup when he faces the USA tomorrow.

Visser is set to earn his 22nd cap at Elland Road, having made his debut for his adopted nation in 2012 after qualifying under the controversial residency rules.

The 28-year-old was born in Zeewolde in the Netherlands but joined the Newcastle Falcons youth academy as a teenager before moving in 2009 to Edinburgh Rugby, where he remained until making the switch to Harlequins this summer.

Visser, whose father Marc was a back-row forward for the Netherlands, became the first Dutchman to play rugby professionally but is the second to feature at the World Cup.

Hans de Goede, who was born in Amsterdam but raised in Victoria, captained Canada at the first global competition in 1987 and went on to earn 24 caps for the Canucks.
