Dunfermline boss Allan Johnston eyeing Dundee double in League Cup

Dunfermline manager Allan Johnston insists his side can compound Tannadice manager Jackie McNamara’s woes by claiming a Dundee double tonight.

The Pars travel travel to Tayside for their League Cup third round tie after seeing off Paul Hartley’s Dark Blues in the previous stage.

And Johnston’s high-flying Dunfermline are confident of causing another upset against a Dundee United team that remain second bottom of the Premiership following the weekend’s draw with Inverness.

United supporters have been getting on McNamara’s back after watching their side make a slow start to the season and Johnston insists the Fife outfit are more than capable of progressing in the competition.

He said: “United are a top quality team. Before Saturday, they had a few disappointing results but by all accounts against the likes of Kilmarnock, they had loads of chances and probably should have won.

“So we are under no illusions just how hard the game is going to be, especially up there.

“However, we took a lot of confidence from the Dundee game and the way we played against them.

“We will need another performance like that where everybody plays at 100 per cent to get a result.”

Johnston, whose side are second top of League One having score 26 goals in seven games, added: “I am sure teams are aware of our potential but Jackie will be focusing on what they can do.

“They have strengthened their squad really well by bringing in boys like Billy McKay, a top quality goal scorer.

“So we are going to have to defend well first and foremost but with the players we have going forward, I am sure we can cause them problems as well.”
