Scotland to produce answer to hit American TV series Twin Peaks

SCOTLAND could soon be enjoying its own answer to the hit American series Twin Peaks.

Plans have been revealed for a new TV series which promises to expose the dark underbelly of Inverness.

Like Twin Peaks, the series will open with the discovery of a teenage girl’s body- sparking a surreal, noir-infused murder investigation against the backdrop of the Highlands.

Award-winning producer Christopher Young has revealed that, after moving his production company from London to Skye, he is planning the long-running series focussing on Scottish criminal underworld.

Young – who produced the first ever Gaelic feature film in 2007 and created Channel 4’s hit teen comedy The Inbetweeners – has announced that the new series will be called Here Comes The Night.

He said that the new series will capitalise on shows like Breaking Bad, Fargo and The Killing – by telling a dark criminal tale in a distinctive setting.

“In terms of a setting, contemporary Scotland is just so under-used”, he went on.

“Generally, we see Scotland as a picturesque backdrop. We need to take a leaf out of the Americans’ book.

“We need to generate really good content that is distinctive. There’s lots to write about in contemporary Scottish life.

“Here Comes The Night is obviously going to be fiction, but what interests me is exploring the Inverness underworld. I feel it’s very rich territory.“

The veteran producer has also revealed his hopes that the series will kickstart a revival for the ailing Scottish TV industry.

Twin Peaks – directed by David Lynch – ran for two series in the 90s, but a new series was announced late last year.

The critically-acclaimed series is hailed as an American classic, with its innovative use of a small-town setting in a sprawling seedy plot.
