Arbroath midfielder David Gold admits he is desperate to get one over on best friend Sam Nicholson when the Red Lichties take on Hearts this evening.

Hearts supporter Gold will fulfill a boyhood dream when he walks out at Tynecastle in tonight’s League Cup first round tie after being a season-ticket holder in Gorgie as a kid.

And the former Hibs trainee, who moved to Gayfield from Berwick Rangers earlier this summer, is particularly looking forward to going toe-to-toe with talented Hearts winger Nicholson.

Gold said: “I’m a Hearts fan so it’s a bit of a dream come true playing at Tynecastle. I’ve played there a few times already but it was always as a youth team player when I was at Hibs. It will be a different experience this time round.

“I’ve been very impressed in how Hearts have recovered since administration, they’ve done everything the right way in giving youth a chance and to be fair the youth have stepped up, the likes of Sam and Jamie Walker.

“I know quite a lot of them and Sam is one of my best pals. I speak to Sam loads and it should be a good experience for us both.

“I was actually with Sam on Tuesday night and we were having a bit of banter.

“My dad was actually sticking up for Sam being a Hearts fan and they were trying to wind me up.”

Gold admits his dad, also named David, will take up an usual position in the away end at Tynecastle tonight.

The 22-year-old added: “My dad will be there, that’s for sure, but he’ll be in the Arbroath end. I’m making him sit in there but he’ll not be bothered because he’ll still be wearing the maroon.

“My dad was a massive Jambo as was my brother so the three of us used to go along.

“I used to be a season ticket holder for four years at Tynecastle when I was about ten but my games got changed to Saturdays so I couldn’t get along.

“Craig Levein was manager at the time and the likes of Steven Pressley and Alan Maybury were in the team.”
