Former Rangers goalkeeper Steve Simonsen has joined Indian Super League outfit FC Pune following his Ibrox exit.

The 36-year-old, who also turned out for Dundee, saw his stint in Scottish football end under a cloud last season after he was handed a two-match ban by the SFA for breaching gambling regulations.

And the journeyman keeper has now decided to pursue a new challenge in the lucrative ISL, where he will come up against superstars such as Nicolas Anelka, Roberto Carlos and Lucio.

Ex-Everton, Stoke City and Sheffield United man Simonsen will be managed by David Platt at Pune and insists he is enthused by his new challenge in Indian football.

He said: “I’m really excited to be joining FC Pune for the Indian Super League season.

“I’m looking forward to working with David Platt, who I think is a very good coach and I can’t wait to join up with my new teammates, get down to some hard work and hopefully bring some success and trophies to the club.”
