Groom bids for wedding prize in mankini

A BESOTTED Glaswegian has become an online hit – after trying to win a dream wedding by posing in a mankini.

Martin McKenna, 35, from Easterhouse in Glasgow, has tweeted revealing snaps showing him posing in a stretchy green thong as part of a competition.

His efforts have been noticed by ex-Celtic player Frank McAvennie, former England footballers Neil Ruddock and Robbie Fowler and Scots actor and comedian Greg Hemphill – who have all retweeted his plea.

And he hopes his sacrifice will help him win a £25,000 wedding with Tina Gibson at a 5-star hotel in St Andrews, complete with a honeymoon in Morocco.

The #ochwedding competition hopefuls have to come up with original and creative ideas to get themselves noticed on social media.

And Martin appears to have taken it further than any other entrant.

He was dared by a friend to wear the strip of material for a full day on Sunday, and took to the challenge with gusto.

He uploaded a picture of himself in the garment, holding a sign that says ‘Tina & Martin to win. #ochwedding #share’.

His snap has become so popular that in the space of 24 hours he has been retweeted by several celebrities, and pictures of fans holding a ‘Martin & Tina #ochwedding’ sign have even appeared in Cyprus, Majorca and New Jersey.

He hopes that his efforts will be noticed by the competition organisers, and will win him and his fiance the “wedding of their dreams”.

Martin first met 35-year-old Tina on a night out three years ago. After a 6-month romance he proposed to her in their kitchen – a moment which he has recreated wearing his mankini.

“We were told to think outside the box with regards to the challenge, so I decided to put myself at my friend’s mercy,” Martin said.

“One of them dared me to wear a mankini for a day – so I did just that. I’ll do anything to get Tina this wedding, she has had a tough time and she is absolutely amazing. She deserves it.

“We only started the challenge yesterday but my picture has already received quite a bit of attention. One of my friends also asked me to quit smoking and so far I’ve stuck to that as well.”

Martin also has another challenge to carry out later this month – turn up to a football match in a cheerleading outfit.

“We just need to convince the powers that we are worthy of the wedding of our dreams,” he added.

“I have a phobia of baked beans and I think they will be the subject of another challenge. We’ve got until July 21 to make as much of an impact on social media as we can.”

The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews paired with the Scottish Wedding Directory Magazine to create the competition in celebration of William and Kate’s fifth wedding anniversary in 2016.

The lucky couple will be married on 29 April, and the package includes a designer wedding dress, a photographer and a wedding breakfast based on the royal couple’s wedding menu.

Other entrants have uploaded cute songs, romantic photographs and even home-made board games in a bid to win.

The winners will be announced on August 25.
